TMT bar weight chart
Standard weight per metre, weight per 12-metre bar and approximate bars per tonne for every TMT diameter from 8 mm to 32 mm.
Weight chart for TMT bars
Reinforcement steel is bought and sold by weight. The nominal weight of a TMT bar in kilograms per metre is calculated as the square of its diameter in millimetres divided by 162 (D²/162). The figures below are nominal; IS 1786 permits a small tolerance on actual weight.
| Diameter | Weight per metre (kg) | Weight per 12 m bar (kg) | Bars per tonne (approx.) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 mm | 0.395 | 4.74 | 211 | Stirrups, ties and slab distribution bars |
| 10 mm | 0.617 | 7.41 | 135 | Slabs and stirrups |
| 12 mm | 0.889 | 10.67 | 94 | Slabs, beams and columns in residences |
| 16 mm | 1.580 | 18.96 | 53 | Beams and columns |
| 20 mm | 2.469 | 29.63 | 34 | Columns and footings |
| 25 mm | 3.858 | 46.30 | 22 | Heavy columns and foundations |
| 32 mm | 6.321 | 75.85 | 13 | Large structures and infrastructure |
Bars per tonne are rounded to the nearest whole bar. Typical uses are indicative only; always follow your structural drawings.
Permissible weight tolerance
IS 1786 allows the actual weight of a bar to deviate slightly from its nominal weight. For individual samples, the permitted variation is approximately:
| Diameter | Tolerance |
|---|---|
| Below 10 mm | ±7% |
| 10 mm to 16 mm | ±5% |
| Over 16 mm | ±3% |
A bar that is consistently lighter than this range may be under-sized, and should be questioned before acceptance.
